Human-Machine Interaction

HuMach: The Distributed Agency of Humans and Machines in Military AI

Project periode: 08/2024 – 07/2028

Funded by: The Independent Research Council Denmark

The HuMach project investigates how the integration of AI technologies in military contexts is transforming human decision-making and agency during warfare.

This research delves into the evolving dynamics between humans and machines, emphasizing how these interactions influence strategic choices and operational effectiveness. By examining the challenges and opportunities presented by AI, HuMach aims to develop new concepts for shared agency and responsible AI governance, addressing fundamental questions about human control and autonomy in modern combat scenarios.

AutoPractices

Governing AI Technologies in Weapon Systems from the Bottom Up

Project periode: 06/2024 – 12/2025

Funded by: The European Research Council

An ERC-funded proof of concept on sustaining and strengthening human agency in military decision-making processes involving AI technologies.

AutoNorms

Weaponised Artificial Intelligence, Norms, and Order

Project periode: 08/2020 – 07/2026

Funded by: The European Research Council

AutoNorms explores the impact of autonomous weapon systems on international norms and legal frameworks governing the use of force.

This project examines how the deployment of AI-driven autonomous weapons is reshaping established practices and ethical considerations in warfare. Through comprehensive analysis, AutoNorms seeks to understand the broader implications of these technologies for global security and the evolving standards for military engagement. The goal is to identify and address shifts in international norms and ensure that the development and use of autonomous systems adhere to ethical and legal standards.
